Backflow Testing in Idaho Falls

Who Is Required to Have a Backflow Prevention Test?
Believe it or not, the vast majority of both residential and commercial properties are required to have a backflow preventer. While nearly all commercial properties are, many residential properties are as well, depending on how their plumbing system is engineered.
According to local law, all of the following properties are required to have a backflow preventer:
- Any premises with an auxiliary water supply in addition to a local water connection
- Any premises having internal cross-connections
- Any premises where inspections for cross-connections cannot be reasonably made
- Any premises where any substance is handled under pressure to the point where it may permit this substance to enter the public water supply
- Any premises with a device or pump that may impact the pressure within a line connected to the city water supply
This last point is what the majority of properties around the area fall under, including a number of homes. However, many homes do not need to have their backflow prevention devices inspected regularly, so long as it is an atmospheric vacuum breaker. For homes that use an automated irrigation system for their lawn or garden, these types of backflow prevention devices are the most common type of backflow prevention used on the lines that feed water to these systems. However, because of the nature of their design, these systems are not testable, making them exempt from testing requirements.
How Often Should I Schedule a Backflow Prevention Test?
Businesses and other properties that use backflow preventer assemblies other than atmospheric vacuum breakers are required to have their backflow prevention device tested once a year (unless they have received an exemption from the city). The cost of this inspection, as well as any repairs or overhauls necessary to maintain compliance, are the responsibility of the property owner.
At The Yard Butler, we make this test as easy as possible. We conduct these tests quickly to minimize downtime and to get your results as soon as we can. If your device passes this test, we will report it to the Water Division Superintendent for you. Should your device fail, we offer a full selection of repairs. Once the repairs are completed and your device has been retested, we’ll report what has been done to the proper authorities for you so you can remain compliant.
